Citizen Astronomers watched the asteroid before, during, and after the impact to gather information about the collision. <strong>With the help of SETI Institute scientists, they are now listed as co-authors on a study appearing <\/strong><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unistellar.com\/nature-revue\/?swcfpc=1\" style=\"font-size: 14px; font-weight: 500;\"><strong>\u00a0in the prestigious scientific journal <i>Nature<\/i>.<\/strong> <\/a>But DART success wasn&#8217;t the only impressive citizen science result last year!<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2022, Unistellar observers also participated in five NASA-sponsored <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unistellar.com\/blog\/unistellar-breaks-exoplanet-record\/?swcfpc=1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">exoplanet observation campaigns<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. They watched these <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unistellar.com\/citizen-science\/exoplanets\/?swcfpc=1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">exoplanets<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> transit, or pass in front of their stars, which allows scientists to learn about the size, orbit and even composition of these distant worlds. Speaking of transits, Citizen Astronomers were again published in 2022 for their record breaking observations of the exoplanet <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unistellar.com\/blog\/unistellar-network-breaks-exoplanet-observing-record\/?swcfpc=1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kepler-167e<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which they watched for almost 32 hours!<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=&#8221;4.19.5&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; custom_css_main_element=&#8221;align-items: center;&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_column type=&#8221;4_4&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.19.5&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.19.5&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Citizen Astronomers are also keeping a sharp eye out for potentially hazardous asteroids near Earth and contributing to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unistellar.com\/citizen-science\/planetary-defense\/?swcfpc=1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Planetary Defense<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In 2022, the Unistellar Network submitted 542 reports on 32 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unistellar.com\/blog\/planetary-defense-rocks-2022\/?swcfpc=1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">different asteroids<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to the Minor Planet Center (MPC), the official repository for near-Earth object data. That helps astronomers get a better idea of these objects\u2019 orbits, and whether they might pose a threat to us (don\u2019t worry, we\u2019re safe for now!). These numerous observations made an imprint &#8211; the Unistellar Network is now submitting more data to the MPC than any other citizen science group.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, it\u2019s not all space rocks \u2014 Unistellar members also <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unistellar.com\/blog\/jwst-launch-to-space\/?swcfpc=1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">watched the JWST<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as it made its way to its home a million miles from Earth after launching in late 2021. With 145 observations over three months, Citizen Astronomers were the only group to track the space telescope throughout its journey and publish the results with the help of SETI Institute scientists. They even caught pivotal moments like course corrections and glints from the telescope\u2019s mirrors unfolding. And with our network growing, that number is only set to increase in 2023.
